EXHIBITION

Either/Or

In retrospect, Melchior examined his own experiences of a hike in the Swedish wilderness (2017). Thirty days long, he experienced a simpler way of living: a limited set of daily tasks, five rolls of film, no cell phone coverage, or access to the Internet—a contrast to modern daily life. The primary reason for this journey was to be in the wilderness.

Two years later, when Melchior reviewed his photographic material, he became observant of a deeper meaning, a sense of truth in the work, and decided to exhibit it. In preparation for the exhibition, Melchior remembers the inherent struggle of choosing the right moment for a photograph. With only 5 rolls of film and no chance of returning to a scenery or situation, the act of choosing becomes a focal point in isolation.

The act of choosing becomes one of the central themes of his exhibition and is built on the foundation of Kierkegaard’s philosophical work "Either/Or," which he carried with him during his hike. The sense of truth when revisiting the photographs is deeply connected to making certain choices and led to an understanding and wider perspective about life itself.

Idéfix Amsterdam dedicated a month-long exhibition (Oct 2019 - Nov 2019) to his photographic work. At the opening and closing of the exhibition, Melchior provided a lecture about his retrospective examination and deeper knowledge of life.
