PROCESS

The proces behind the completed works

Having worked for several years at a contemporary art museum, Melchior became intimately familiar with the diverse works of the museum collection. Unlike his colleagues, many of whom were art school graduates, Melchior charted his own path into the art world. Self-taught in photography, his experience at the museum proved immensely valuable. Surrounded by the photographic works of Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky, Melchior found inspiration for his own artistic direction.

Beyond the photographs themselves, the presentation of his work became equally important. The selection of labs, paper, printing technique, scanning and printing became a study on its own, offering a crash course in the art of presenting art. Additionally, Melchior personally handcrafted each wooden frame. Each frame is painted with custom made colors to complement the art works perfectly —not too bright, not too dark— to provide the ideal presentation for each piece.

EXHIBITION

Either/Or

Written by the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard, 'Either/Or' is a work wherein the distinction between the aesthetically and ethically modes of life is examined. Years later, when Melchior revived the negatives of his 500 km hike through the wilderness (2017), he wondered how these photographs were taken and remembered the struggle of choosing the right moment with only five rolls of film.

The transformations in thinking about making photographs during this hike are the starting point of his investigation that led to further inquiries about choosing in life. Carrying the work of Kierkegaard on his back in solitude and a film camera among equipment to survive, could be called an interesting coincidence that led Melchior to embrace the artistic and philosophical side of photography.
